Change4Campbelltown Workshop

On Wednesday 8 August, I had the privilege to be able to take seven Year 11 girls to Wests Leagues Club to participate in an interactive workshop where the aim was to look at opportunities to build a healthier future for Campbelltown. The girls who attended the workshop were Stephanie E, Amy S, Natalie S, Olivia F, Julia P, Kate R and Emily W.

The workshop was an exciting opportunity for members of the local community to have a voice in creating a healthier, happier future for children and families living in Campbelltown and to make positive, long lasting health changes to the places where our young people eat, learn, live and play.

The statistics and information provided at the workshop in relation to the health status of our young people was extremely alarming with one statistic showing that if every person in Australia remained in the 'healthy' weight range, there would be an extra $60,000,000,000 (60 billion) in funds available to Government agencies.

Professors from Deakin University presented evidence from studies that showed young people who partake in a healthy diet and meet basic physical activity standards learn better, achieve higher, are more likely to pursue professional employment opportunities, have more positive relationships, have lower rates of mental health issues and are financially better off long term. The take home message being that if we want our girls to be the best version of themselves they can be, it starts with a healthy diet and basic exercise.

Being the only school represented at the workshop made the girls a bit of a novelty amongst the 200 strong crowd, however, they were blown away by the maturity, knowledge and passion the girls displayed for not only the health status of young people in general but also the Campbelltown community as a whole. The girls were constantly bombarded by people asking for their thoughts, ideas and opinions on a range of topics and initiatives. It is an amazing experience for the girls to see such a positive public health initiative in action and will serve them well during their HSC.

The girls should be extremely proud of the way they presented themselves at the workshop and the maturity they displayed among a much older crowd. The day finished off with a tour of Campbeltown Stadium, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
